New York Shit ...

|

One thing leading to another I found this intriguing web page on imdb : Escape from New York (2009) . No information , but this might be a remake of the classic John Carpenter's Escape From New York . That would be pretty interesting to see again the dirty old New York . We'll see what's up soon .

"It is 1997 and a nearly destroyed New York City has become a walled prison for over 3 million convicted criminals who have lost, but survived, a brutal war against the United States Police Force. In this maximum security prison-city, escape has been made impossible – every bridge is mined and walled, the surrounding waters are filled with deadly electricity and the Statue of Liberty has become just another guard tower from which officers in infra-red goggles blast, on sight, any prisoners desperate enough to try to get out. " The rest of the original story here .

"French artist SPACE INVADER finally brought his 8-bit style street art indoors when his first solo show in London , “Space Invasion & Bad Men Part II” opened at the tastemaking LAZARIDES GALLERY last Friday .
Divided into two halves , the first part , “London Invasion” documents the artist’s extensive street work in Fogtown through a series of photographs chronicling 100 individual applications of his iconic ceramic tile appliqués on city walls and monuments .
The second half, “Bad Men Part II,” located in the gallery’s dungeon-like basement features all new 3-D works depicting Hollywood bad guys like Freddy Kruger , Scarface , and Frankenstein , in large-scale tiled panels exemplifying his trademark “Rubik Cubist” style ."

During the few days I spent in Paris , I took the time to visit the Museum Of The Quai Branly , close to the Tour Eiffel , a nice place to acknowledge the wealth of non western cultures in past and present , a wealth neither related to money nor technology . Make the first step and read the presentation !

"A new museum… In the heart of Paris's museum land, neighbouring the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, a few minutes from the Grand and Petit Palais, the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musée du quai Branly has an exceptional location on the banks of the River Seine, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
The arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas now form part of the historical and artistic grand tour of the capital.
The Musée du quai Branly is an innovative cultural institution - museum, educational and research centre, and public living space all in one. Built on one of the last available sites in the heart of Paris, the architectural design of this original project is the work of Jean Nouvel.

[...]

A museum of non-Western arts During the 20th century, non-Western arts started to be seen in museum collections. This development was largely thanks to cubist and fauvist artists, influenced by writers and critics from Apollinaire to Malraux, and in the wake of the work of such great anthropologists as Claude Lévi-Strauss.
The idea of opening a museum in Paris in 2006, entirely devoted to the arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and America gave shape to a worthy ambition - to enable a whole range of viewpoints, from the ethnologist's to the art historian's, to be brought to bear upon the artefacts in question, and bring official recognition to the place occupied by civilisations and cultural heritages of peoples often held apart from global culture today.

Under the august patronage of UNESCO, the Musée du quai Branly has already welcomed over 3.5 million enthusiastic visitors to the Pavillon des Sessions, its 'branch' at the Musée du Louvre, since the year 2000.

After years of dispersal and difficulties, it was necessary to rediscover the many precious collections assembled in France over the last five hundred years. The museum has this responsibility to its national and international public, as well as to those from the countries of origin.

The collection comprises some 300,000 artefacts, most of them coming from the Musée de l’Homme (250,000 items from the ethnology laboratory) and the Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie (25,000 items).

From October 2001 to the museum's opening in June 2006, a major preventive conservation campaign was carried out on all artefacts, during which they were inventoried, subjected to dust removal, photographed, digitised, and stored. In parallel, an ambitious acquisition policy was implemented as from 1997.

The collection is organised by geographical area: Africa,, America, Asia and Oceania. It also accommodates geographically transversal collections (the musical instruments collection, the History collection, and the textiles collection), and a remarkable collection of photographs. The permanent collections area exhibits 3,500 artefacts from the four continents. To the west, it is crossed by the Music tower, a massive glass edifice rising through 5 levels to the very top of the building, and conserving 8,700 musical instruments. Beyond the sculptures, which vaunt their plastic power and formal variety throughout the museum, three domains - music, textiles, and silversmithery - show how major a role art plays in everyday life.

[...]

Designed by Jean Nouvel, architect - in Paris- from the Institut du Monde Arabe (with Architecture Studio) and the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, the Musée du quai Branly building resembles a long footbridge, partly covered with wood, and stretching into the trees.

Hidden from view by thick vegetation, and protected from the noise of the quays by a glass palisade, the museum only reveals itself gradually, and the visitor becomes explorer. To reach it, he must cross an undulating garden designed to create an impression of remote, untamed greenery. In the building, which is perched on piles, all is curved, fluid, transparent, mysterious and, above all, warmly receptive.

The architectural ensemble takes in five levels, crowned by a wide terrace with fine views of the Eiffel Tower and Paris. Inside, glass walls replace windows, and their transparency and the natural background afforded by the trees offer no distraction from the artefacts themselves. Suspended 'boxes', clearly visible from the outside and displaying works of similar origin, enable the visitor to gain further knowledge of a people or a culture.

Apart from the areas devoted to permanent exhibition and the more flexible ones reserved for international exhibitions, the building also houses major reserve collections open to researchers, a mediatheque, lecture rooms and classrooms, and a theatre which, in summer, opens onto the 'open-air amphitheatre in the garden."

Graduation ...

|

Last saturday , I had the pleasure to attend the first show of the Glow In The Dark Tour ... the worldwide tour of Kanye West , scheduled to support his latest effort called Graduatation .

This event took place , just few days after the death of Kanye's mother , Donda west . It was not an easy decision to not cancel the show in such conditions , but Kanye did what he thought was the best for him , at a professional level and a personal one .

Of course I was waiting for the whole week to hear they postpone the show , and until the entrance I was , like many others , unsure about seeing Kanye on stage .

Eventually the 6,000 of us ended after a very cold afternoon in the warmth of the Zenith , at the east end of Paris .

The first part definititely set the tone . Common , a "hall of famer" of hip hop , was the first to host us , with a simple performance in front of a white curtain , which was hiding an improbable futurisic scene . No need to say the Chicagoan did more than his side-kick job and put the whole audience on fire . A memorable performance , for sure .

Go

The Light

Drivin' Me Wild

Forever Begins

After a little musical interlude , Kanye was next .

Behind the scene photos and renderings

He appeared in a blinding white spotlight , in the darkness of the hall ... with an instrumental version of Stronger , the credits showing up on the light wall behind the scene . Just the time to raise the pressure , and he slowly debuted his show singing Good Morning .

The rest is history ... Can't Tell Me Nothing ... Through The Wire ... Touch The Sky ... Flashing Lights ... Jesus Walks ... Good Life ... Homecoming ... Big Brother ... almost all the songs of Graduation , and classic material issued of College Dropout & Late Registration ...

Stronger

Flashing Lights

Heard 'em Say

Get 'em High

... all this before an emotional Hey Mama . This was too much for him to handle , only 6 days after the loss of his mother . He collapsed , breaking down in tears in front of the whole crowd . He just couldn't go any further. He just stood there , crying , while his band continued playing . After being comforted by the band and Common , he left , coming back after several minutes to perform Stronger .

At this special moment Kanye showed he was Hip Hop ... sharing his feelings through the rhymes , something Hip Hop was dedicated to at first , before all the folklore of the girls , the cars , the guns or the money ... some behaviour he already had recording Through The Wire after a near fatal accident , telling his dramatic story to the whole world .

He kept shouting out to the audience, "I need you ... I need you right now" , and the public was screaming back . It was real .

Some might say it wasn't normal for him to perform this night , but for him it was his way to try to overcome what can't be .

Kanye shared his pain . You can't blame that .

Shoutouts to him .

Huf givin' props to Rakim ...

From what I know the legend has a full album ready to come out ... the only problem is that it's a little more difficult to release a new opus in the year 2007 if you are not Kanye or 50 , even for the greatests .
